An excellent turnout to see some very wet racing
Last weekend I attended an event that seems to be growing in size every year, this was the Alan Healy Memorial Rally. Every year bigger crowds and more cars seem to be joining in the fun of driving around the famous Lincolnshire circuit the wrong way round (plus other configurations!). Despite the weather, the turnout was remarkably good – I’ve been to quieter international meetings than this one. I suppose it’s the hardy rally fans stick it out in any condition that made it so busy.
As I mentioned, the weather wasn’t great particularly in comparison to the sun of last year. Heavy rain showers at the beginning of the day meant the competitors certainly had some difficulties ahead. Unfortunately a few too many found things out the hard way, most notably was last years winner David Turnbull rolling his ex-WRC Subaru Impreza on the exit of Coppice having slid across the grass. I can honestly say it’s one of the bigger accidents I’ve seen in recent times so was relieved to hear that all involved were OK.
Next up for me is the Avon Tyres British GT Championship Media Day taking place at Donington Park on Tuesday followed by a quick two day break before jetting off to the Autodromo di Nazionale Monza for the opening round of the Blancpain Endurance Series. It’s going to be a very busy week!
